Fempower Magazine – Blog Two Minute Therapy session

case: Two Minute Therapy

In this blog post, an example is given of the kind of issues that can be discussed through TwoMinuteTherapy.

It’s Thursday night, the Westerkerk clock struck six o’clock a while ago.. 6:15pm.. nope, she’s not coming anymore I think and store her files. That’s how it often goes with Mariska, a busy lawyer with two kids and an even busier husband. She often sends me an email 5 minutes before the start of a session or half an hour after our time when she suddenly notices the reminder on her phone. We talk about it when I see her the following week and she tells me she’s had a terrible week. ‘Jeannette, many times I’ve thought of calling you.. I just couldn’t handle it all! And then this meeting I had with a client just went on and on..’ Anyways, after the session it came to me, she’s not the only one: busy life, lots of things to juggle. And it’s during this time we need support and clarity, to touch base for a moment.. but how? “If it’s really that important, you’ll make time for it, right?” Yes you could say that but that’s an easy answer from our therapist point of view. These types of people just keep running. We don’t live in a 9 to 5 society anymore. People travel all the time and live their lives online. So: Modern day therapy? I proposed Mariska to leave me a voicemail the next time she had another one of those weeks, which she thought was a great idea. She’s doing a lot better now. She’s found a new rhythm in coming to a session every now and again, and in between I support her with voice messages when something is bothering her, even when she’s traveling and comes back to her hotel room at night. And… she feels better about herself because she’s better at scheduling our sessions.

I call it TwoMinuteTherapy. Like a powerboost.

I’ve been working as a psychologist/ coach in my own practice in the heart of Amsterdam. I see a lot of clients living a busy life and I help them finding a balance in that lifestyle. This also means taking the time to actually figure out what the issues are. Anyway, I’ve noticed a lot op people are in the same boat: juggling loads of things and right now are in need of support or advice but not knowing how to fit it in?! My clients are also battling this practical dilemma and because of that therapy sometimes comes last. Deadlines, kids, traveling etc. sometimes make it impossible and they won’t be able to make it at the last moment.. Such a shame! There has to be a way I thought. And that’s when the in-between solution came to life: Modern day therapy with the use of the voice message of Whatsapp. Your therapist within reach with Whatsapp!
